The north face of La Meije in black and white, in a single sweep: baryta paper gives the dark rocks their density, in a black frame.

The story behind the photo
The north face of La Meije does not rise gradually. It goes up in one movement from the pastures to the snow, and the frame is built to keep that abruptness: a dark sweep of slope across the lower part of the picture, then the wall, then cloud caught on the summit ridge.
At the very bottom, small enough to be missed at first glance, stands a farm. It is the only built thing in the image and it does all the measuring: without it the wall could be any height at all; with it the scale becomes brutally clear. I placed it deliberately low and left it that size.
Black and white, because this face is about mass and edge rather than colour. In monochrome the snowfields separate cleanly from the rock, the couloirs read as drawn lines, and the roof of the farm keeps just enough tone to be found once you know to look for it.
People have worked this valley for centuries, on land that is steep, short of summer, and directly beneath several million tonnes of hanging glacier. When I photograph the wall, what I keep coming back to is the decision to build at the foot of it, and the fact that the building is still there.
