The great metal arch of the Dom Luís bridge, in black and white: Aluminium Dibond renders every rivet and every girder crisply.

The story behind the photo

The Dom Luís I bridge in Porto, in black and white, framed so that the great arch crosses the entire image and the city behind it is reduced to a dense grey texture of roofs. The structure is the subject and the town is the background, the reverse of how this view is usually made.

Monochrome is not a mood here, it is a tool. In colour, Porto is terracotta and the iron is dark green, and the two fight. In black and white the lattice becomes line work, the roofs become grain, and the eye can finally follow the curve of the arch from one bank to the other without being distracted.

The sun catches the ironwork while the far bank stays in softer light, which keeps the bank from separating too strongly and lets the metalwork read as a drawing laid over the city. I exposed for the highlights on the ironwork so the diagonals would stay bright against everything behind them.

It is often attributed to Gustave Eiffel, and it is not his: it was designed by Théophile Seyrig, his former partner, after they had gone their separate ways, and inaugurated in 1886. Eiffel built the Maria Pia bridge just upstream. I like that the most famous iron arch in Porto belongs to the man history forgot.

I wanted a photograph of a decision rather than of a landmark: two decks, one arch, and the moment engineering becomes an aesthetic.
