The story behind the photo
Moret-sur-Loing seen from the far bank at the end of the day, with the church tower, the old gate and the mill houses standing along the water, and the Loing itself reduced to a single unbroken surface. The town occupies a narrow horizontal band across the middle of the frame; everything below it is water, everything above it is cloud.
The water is smooth because the exposure was long, and the exposure was long on purpose. At that hour the Loing has small ripples that fragment every reflection and make the picture busy; give the shutter twenty or thirty seconds and the ripples average out into a mirror that doubles the town and doubles the light. What is lost is the texture of the river. What is gained is the silence.
The light is the last of the blue hour: the sky still holds grey and blue while the windows and the street lamps have already turned amber. Those are the twenty minutes when the two light sources are of equal strength, and a town lit from inside sits comfortably in a sky that is not yet dark.
Sisley painted this very bank for years, and the town has changed less than one might expect. I find that reassuring rather than intimidating: a place that has been looked at carefully for a century and a half is not used up; it is simply well known.
I wanted a photograph of a small town at the moment it stops being busy, and a river that agrees to hold still.
