The stream drops through a staircase of rock shelves and the autumn canopy closes over it, leaving one opening in the leaves through which the whole fall is visible. I framed that opening rather than the water — the title is a description of the composition, not a metaphor.
Upright, with mossed rock filling the left edge and gold foliage across the top, so the bright water sits in a hole cut out of darker material on three sides. A wider frame would have shown more of the wood and much less of the fall.
The river was running hard after rain, so I kept the exposure short enough for the water to stay white and turbulent rather than silky. This picture wanted noise, not calm, and a long exposure would have made it peaceful and wrong.
These woods are half an hour from Paris and full of walkers on a Sunday. Getting a frame with nobody in it means going on a wet Tuesday, which is also when the stream is at its best. The inconvenience and the picture tend to arrive together.
