Rapeseed of an almost unreasonable yellow: acrylic glass keeps all that brilliance, and the white frame the lightness of spring.

The story behind the photo
In early April 2025, a rapeseed field near Vert-le-Grand in the Essonne burst into that particular, almost unreasonable yellow that only lasts a few weeks each spring. A single tree stood at the field’s edge, gnarled and stark, its branches still bare against a sky gone a deep, saturated blue.
There is nothing else in the frame: hard yellow below, clean blue above. I kept the tree small and slightly off centre, because the emptiness around it is what gives it its size. The rapeseed was at the exact stage where the colour is uniform and the field reads as a single surface rather than as individual plants. A week earlier it is patchy, a week later it has begun to go over, and that narrow window is most of what this picture required.
The contrast between tree and field felt less like a photograph of spring than a photograph of the idea of spring. From a distance, the field genuinely looks as if it is on fire, which is where the title comes from.
