Almost nothing but mist: matt cotton paper renders these very soft greys without reflections, and the white frame gives the vulture room to breathe.

The story behind the photo

A vulture crossing the mist in the Pyrenees, and almost nothing else: a ridge sliding out of the lower corner on a diagonal, a white sky with no horizon in it, and one bird holding the empty half of the frame. I let the composition go as far towards emptiness as it could without collapsing. The mountain is reduced to a single line, the bird to a silhouette barely wider than a thumb, and the distance between the two does the rest of the work.

Cloud has diffused the light completely, leaving the picture almost monochrome: a pale blue-grey closer to ink on paper than to wildlife photography. Mist also removes scale: with no tree, no rock and no second bird to measure it against, the vulture could be thirty metres away or five hundred, and the eye never settles the question.

What I felt up there was not excitement but a kind of suspension. Sound goes first in the mist, then distance, and you end up listening for wingbeats you cannot hear. When the bird finally came through, it was already leaving.

My intention was to photograph the emptiness and let the vulture prove that it exists, rather than photograph the vulture and let the emptiness serve as background.
