The story behind the photo
La Défense after dark, from the empty esplanade, with the towers rising on both sides and a sky that has taken on the strange green cast of a city lit entirely by artificial light. Nobody is in the frame. The walkway runs out of the bottom of the picture and disappears between the buildings.
The composition is a funnel, and I kept it deliberately unbalanced: the tall dark mass on the right, the lit towers further away on the left, and the paving leading into the gap between them. A symmetrical version of this view exists and is far less uncomfortable, which is why I did not make it.
The colour is not a filter. Fluorescent and other artificial lighting bouncing off low cloud produces exactly this sickly green-teal, and correcting it to neutral would have removed the only thing that makes the picture feel like that hour. I exposed for the windows and let the ground go almost black.
This district empties completely at night. A hundred and eighty thousand people work here and comparatively few live here, so after eight in the evening you can walk for twenty minutes without meeting anyone, between buildings designed for crowds.
I wanted a photograph of that emptiness rather than of the skyline: a business quarter photographed at the hour when it has no business left.
