Long tailed tit couple

Two long-tailed tits on a lichen-covered branch at Rueil-Malmaison, turned towards each other, tails pointing in opposite directions. The branch crosses the frame on a diagonal and the two birds sit on either side of its centre, so the composition balances without ever becoming symmetrical. Their tails are longer than their bodies, which is what makes the species look permanently improbable, and here they work as two lines pulling the picture gently apart.
I kept the aperture wide open so the foliage behind them would collapse into a single soft green. It was not a decision about beauty but about hierarchy: at this size, a bird only exists if nothing else in the frame is competing for attention. The light is filtered and indirect, the pale grey light of a wooded spring afternoon, and it suits a bird whose plumage is essentially white, pink and soot.
Long-tailed tits move constantly and in groups, in that nervous, chattering flow that crosses a wood like a rumour. Two of them stopping at the same moment, on the same branch, at the same height, is not a common sight and it does not last. I had perhaps a second and a half.
What I wanted was the pause rather than the birds: the small, improbable interval when a species built entirely out of movement decides to be still.
