The story behind the photo
A grey heron on the Lac des Ibis at Le Vésinet, standing on a raft of bare roots in the middle of the water, with a willow leaning over the far bank. The frame is vertical, an odd choice for a bird built so horizontally, and it is vertical for the sake of the reflection: the heron holds the upper third, the tangle of roots the middle, and the mirrored bird runs down the lower third like a signature.
The water was perfectly still. Still water does not simply repeat the subject: it doubles the composition, halves the light, and turns a small park lake into something far older and more silent than it really is. The light itself is filtered through the willow and arrives green, so the whole picture sits inside a narrow band of greens and greys, with only the white of the neck allowed to break it.
This is a place I keep coming back to, and that is exactly why the photograph matters to me. It is not an expedition. It is a lake in the western suburbs of Paris where a bird stands on a heap of dead wood and behaves like the last heron on earth.
I wanted the print to give an ordinary place the gravity it quietly deserves, and to let the reflection do most of the talking.
