The story behind the photo
The Golden Gate at blue hour, in a vertical frame, with the lamps on the deck already lit and the last daylight still in the sky behind. In the foreground the tide slides up the dark sand and breaks over a low rock; in the background the bridge is a line of small warm lights. The title comes from that split: the top of the picture is still day, the bottom is already night.
The vertical format is what makes it work. A horizontal frame would have given me the bridge and taken away the beach; standing the picture on end gives two thirds of the surface to sand and water and forces the structure to earn its place at the top.
The exposure is long enough to turn the surf into a pale, moving veil and short enough to keep the shape of the wave that is breaking. There is a narrow window between water that is frozen and water that has disappeared, and the whole craft of this kind of picture lies in finding it, usually by trying and failing a dozen times while the light drops.
Blue hour on this coast seems to last a little longer than it does inland, as the fog sends the light back. It is also the moment when the temperature falls and the beach empties, and you find yourself alone with a bridge that a thousand people are photographing from the viewpoints above.
I wanted a photograph of two different times of day held in the same frame, and a famous silhouette seen from the cold end of the day.
