An almost black and white image where only the red lights stand out: matt Aluminium Dibond keeps this red crisp without reflections.

The story behind the photo
The Guimard entrance at Blanche, with its two red lamps standing up like insect eyes, and the Moulin Rouge behind it on the boulevard. The metro sign is close, large and slightly low in the frame; the mill is further away and smaller, and the two reds answer each other across the picture.
That echo is the entire idea. I moved until the lamps of the entrance and the sails of the mill sat in the same plane without overlapping, so the eye would travel between them. The rest of the scene is deliberately drained of colour: the buildings, the cars and the sky are left almost neutral, which turns two shades of red into the only event in the photograph.
The light is flat winter daylight, and it suits the subject. Sun on Pigalle at midday is harsh and cheap; grey light lets the wrought iron read as a black drawing and keeps the mill from looking like a sign.
Both objects are pure 1900: the cabaret opened in 1889, the metro entrance was installed at the start of the new century, and both were considered vulgar by serious people. One is now a listed monument and the other a global brand.
I wanted a photograph about two survivors of the same era, and the strange politeness with which they share a street corner.
