The cast-iron leaves of the Guimard entrance in black and white: baryta paper gives the metal relief and delivers true blacks.

The story behind the photo

The Guimard entrance at Châtelet, photographed in black and white, with the iron fronds of the canopy spreading over the stairs and a line of Haussmann facades closing the street behind. The structure occupies the centre of the frame and the buildings are allowed to stay flat and grey, so the only ornament in the picture is the metalwork.

Black and white is the whole decision here. In colour this entrance is green, the bicycles are red and blue, the awnings are orange, and the eye goes everywhere. Remove the colour and what is left is a drawing: a cast-iron plant growing out of the pavement in front of a city built on straight lines. That opposition is the subject.

The light is flat and overcast, which suits both the metal and the stone. Direct sun would have thrown the pattern of the canopy onto the ground and confused two graphic systems that need to stay separate; under cloud, the ironwork keeps its silhouette and the facades keep their grid.

Guimard designed these entrances for the opening of the network in 1900, and Paris hated them at first. Several dozen survive. Standing under one at street level, with the trains running underneath, you are in one of the few places where the city’s nineteenth century and its daily commute occupy the same square metre.

I wanted a portrait of a piece of street furniture that the city walks past a hundred thousand times a day without looking at.
