Robin song

A robin at Le Pecq, singing on a bare branch, beak wide open and throat swollen with the effort. The frame is close, the branch crosses it on a diagonal, and the background has been reduced to a warm brown and green wash in which nothing can be identified. Only the bird and the sound exist.
The composition is built around the open beak and the space in front of it. I left the picture deliberately open in the direction the bird is facing, because a photograph of a song needs somewhere for the song to go. Had I centred the robin, the image would have become a portrait; offset, with air ahead of it, it becomes an action.
The light is soft and lateral, and it is the correct light for this bird. Hard sun on an orange breast produces a flat, almost fluorescent patch of colour; diffused light keeps the gradation between the orange, the grey of the face and the brown of the back, which is where all the finesse of a robin actually lies.
A robin singing is not being charming. It is drawing a border, and repeating it until the neighbours agree. There is something bracing in that, a very small animal maintaining a territory with nothing but noise, in a garden that has no idea a negotiation is under way.
I wanted to photograph a sound, which is impossible, and to settle for the exact posture of an animal that has decided to be heard.
