The story behind the photo
A robin at Le Pecq, singing on a bare branch, beak wide open and throat swollen with the effort. The frame is close, the branch crosses it on a diagonal, and the background has been reduced to a warm wash of brown and green in which nothing can be identified. Only the bird and the sound exist.
The composition is built around the open beak and the space in front of it. I deliberately left the picture open in the direction the bird is facing, because a photograph of a song needs somewhere for the song to go. Had I centred the robin, the image would have become a portrait; offset, with air ahead of it, it becomes an action.
The light is soft and comes from the side, the right light for this bird. Hard sun on an orange breast produces a flat, almost fluorescent patch of colour; diffused light keeps the gradation between the orange, the grey that borders it and the brown of the back, and that is where all the subtlety of a robin lies.
A singing robin is not being charming. It is drawing a border, and repeating it until the neighbours agree. There is something bracing in that: a very small animal holding a territory with nothing but noise, in a garden that has no idea a negotiation is under way.
I wanted to photograph a sound, which is impossible, and settled for the exact posture of an animal that has decided to be heard.

Materials
Hahnemühle fine art papers (Photo Rag, Museum Etching, Fine Art Baryta…), chosen for each photograph.
Print mounted on 3 mm aluminium Dibond: rigid, light, no glazing.
Print set between 3 mm Dibond and an acrylic sheet: richer colour and depth, resistant to UV and humidity.
Framing, optional
For paper prints: white mount and Plexiglas glazing, museum glass optional. The mount puts space between the photo and the frame: a classic, understated look that draws the eye to the image.
For aluminium and acrylic, black or white. A narrow gap separates the photo from the moulding: it seems to hang suspended inside its frame, for a contemporary look.
For aluminium and acrylic: an aluminium structure fixed to the back, invisible once hung. The photo seems to rest on the wall, slightly set off from it.
Delivery and returns
Signed-for delivery by Colissimo or, depending on the country, to a pickup point; signed-for delivery by courier for Large and Extra large sizes and some framed prints. Usually two to three weeks in mainland France and Europe, thirty to forty-five days for the French overseas territories and other countries.
